The State Of Morality In America

This is a response to an article I read at http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/07/28/court-university-expel-student-opposes-homosexuality/#content. I tried posting this as a comment on that article but, they have a 1500 character limit, so I wasn’t able to post the entire thing. This isn’t meant to discourage anyone from being politically active, but it is meant as an encouragement to check where your heart is.

While I don’t necessarily disagree with Julea Ward's beliefs, I believe that Christians have brought this upon themselves. Christians should be known for what they are for and what they love rather than what they are against and what they hate. Jesus loved and was loved by sinners and was often invited to their homes to eat, which meant he must have been fun to be around. He told them to go and sin no more, but not before he showed them love and compassion and met a need of theirs. His harshest rebukes were reserved for self righteous religious leaders who followed the letter of the law but not the heart of it. He said in Matthew 7:21-23, "Not everyone who says to me, 'LORD, LORD,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only those who do the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'LORD, LORD, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'“ Matthew 5:48 says, “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect,” but no one is perfect, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Our only hope is to trust in the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross. It’s not enough to be a moral person, to go to church, or to do good works. You have know and love Jesus, and to share his love with people who don’t know him. I fail to see the love of Christ in people holding signs that say, “God hates fags.”

In 1 Corinthians 5:9-13 Paul said, “I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people-- not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with any who claim to be fellow believers but are sexually immoral or greedy, idolaters or slanderers, drunkards or swindlers. With such persons do not even eat. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? ‘God will judge those outside. Expel the wicked person from among you.’" The reason the country is going downhill morally is because Christians aren’t doing their job of loving sinners and instead are being self righteous hypocrites. According to a Barna poll, “Divorce rates among conservative Christians were significantly higher than for other faith groups, and much higher than Atheists and Agnostics experience.” As Jesus said in Matthew 7:3, "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in someone else's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” It’s time for Christians to stop expecting non-believers to act morally, to get their own house in order and seek Jesus with all our hearts. Then and only then will we see the change we desire in our nation.
